The Child and the Magic Spells

L'enfant et les sortilèges
The Child and the Magic Spells

An Opera North production with workshops led by TSF.

Toured theatres in the North of England - French opera for KS2-5

In Autumn 2017, Opera North presented matinee performances of this French opera for schools and, in partnership with TSF, offered a series of in-school two-hour workshops.

Written by French composer, Maurice Ravel, to a libretto by French novelist Colette, the story centres on a naughty child, who learns compassion and empathy after being chastised by fairytale characters, furniture, plants and animals upon whom he has inflicted cruelty.

Performed in French, the production was approximately 45 minutes in duration.

Theatre dates:

Leeds Grand Theatre: Tuesday 17 October 2017, 12:00pm

Newcastle Theatre Royal: Thursday 9 November 2017, 12:00pm

The Lowry, Salford Quays: Thursday 16 November 2017, 12:00pm

Workshops (for KS2-4):

Held in schools, the two-hour workshops will help pupils explore the music, plot and characters in Ravel's opera by uncovering the French language behind the libretto. A free teachers' resource pack will also be available for all schools attending a matinee performance.
